Looking Ahead 10/17 - 10/21
Congratulations to our first two students who were recognized for the APEX Leadership Characteristic of the Day! We have two more coming up. Thank you for all the work you have been doing for helping gather pledges. Our class currently has met several goals and as a result has earned extra recess, tech time, No Homework (this coming Thursday), and an upcoming PJ day! Keep up the great work! We are SOOOOO close to having a Game Day with 'Caesar Salad,' our APEX Coach.
Abby shared a Multiplication Flower with the class during math last week. One factor goes in the center (ie. 10), and the other factors go around the smaller petals. The larger petals hold the products. What a creative way to practice basic multiplication facts!
In addition to starting Mad Minutes - timed, 3 minute multiplication tests - we've also had a few Leaderboard Challenges. In math, Amatullah holds the record for 107 multiplication questions answered correctly in 15 minutes. Even with a glitch - her computer froze and she had to turn it off and restart it AND the program - Amatullah was able to hold on to her impressive lead! Julia, Myra, Lexi, and Heidi rounded out the rest of the top 5.
In our Language Arts Leaderboard Challenge, Heidi came in first with 84 correctly answered questions. We will see what happens this week...

Coming up...
Math
We are finishing up Chapter 4 in math. We bumped our test to Thursday, Oct. 20 (instead of Wednesday) so students had another day to review their facts and making tables/finding patterns. Please be on the look out for individual math lessons going home.
Writing
We continue to work on Personal Narratives. Students are writing shorter pieces and will chose one to edit and turn into their final piece, making sure to include 3rd grade standards, such as dialogue. Students have also been writing some poetry! Hopefully, they will have finished their Autumn poems by the end of the week and can share them.
Science and Language Arts
Students read a non-fiction story about a Hurricane Hunter - a special pilot who flies into hurricanes to give NOAA important data about the storm. We will be integrating Science and Language Arts as we begin our study of climate and weather this week. Please talk to your child about the incredible storms that happening off the East Coast. There have been several hurricanes in the last 2-3 weeks alone!
Art
In addition to the Visual Art class the students attend 1x a week, we have been working on our own projects. Currently, we are working on our Starry Night Pumpkins. We finished the drawing today and will be using oil pastels and watercolors to finish them up. Take a look at
their progress so far!
Tests and Other Stuff...
October 17 - October 25 Halloween Grams! Sales benefit the 5th grade class.
Thursday, Oct. 20 - Chapter 4 math test
Thursday, Oct. 20 - APEX Fun Run 12:30 - 1:30 (immediately following lunch)
Thursday, Oct. 20 - NO HOMEWORK incentive achieved! Yay!
Pumpkin Palooza!
Wednesday, Oct. 26 - Please bring your decorated pumpkin in for 3rd Grade's 3rd Annual Pumpkin Palooza! Pumpkins SHOULD NOT be carved! Just decorated like book character. Instructions went home last week.
Thursday, Oct. 27 - Friday, Oct. 28 - Pumpkin Palooza! Pumpkins will be on display in the MPR for other classes to see.
Friday, Oct. 28 - Students bring their pumpkins home.
In the future...
Friday, Oct. 28 - Chapter 5 math test. Changed to Wednesday, November 2!
Friday, Oct. 28 - Trunk or Treat
Monday, Oct. 30 - Halloween
Friday, November 4 - Last Day for Reading Counts (first trimester). Students need to read, and successfully pass, a minimum of 3 books. Books need to be at, or close to, your child's reading level. Pigeon Drives The Bus, for example, is not an option! Students need a 70% or better for the quiz to count as passing. Students may retake a test 2 additional times (but must wait 24 hours) if they did not pass it the first time.
Have a great week,
C. Simón
