Looking Ahead at September 12 - 16
MyGoodDeed, d.b.a. 9/11 Day is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that created and annually organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance as a permanent tribute to those killed and injured on 9/11, and to the many brave individuals who rose in service in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. (from 911day.org)
Their mission is to take back the day and "transform the anniversary of 9/11 into a national day of doing good." Americans of all ages are encouraged to volunteer, perform good deeds and other acts of kindness, and support charities if they are able. As we spoke about in class, no act is too small. Ask your child to tell you about The Man With The Red Bandana and 14 Cows for America! Both are true stories.
This week we are finishing, or continuing, what we started:
Math - we wrap up Chapter 1 and take our first math test. It is lengthy (because they have to write and explain so answers), so we will be breaking it up. KUDOS!! to Scarlet and Jasper who completed over 300 questions on ixl - including multiple skills related to our upcoming test - just this weekend! By the time we take this test, we will have spent 3 weeks on this chapter alone. Students do need to know and understand their vocabulary words and should have brought home their vocabulary cards a week ago. I will spend quite a bit of time modeling how to correctly write the answers so they can get full credit.
Social Studies / Language Arts - Last week we read The Man With The Red Bandana as well as 14 Cows for America. This week, we are going to compare and contrast the settings, cultures, and geography of both stories. We will also take a look at how these things might affect their perspectives.
Our overarching theme this week is Kindness and Compassion. Look for service homework to be coming home! As far as our classroom/school rules and procedures go, we will continue to work on transitions and making sure we are turning in our best work.
Skills: In grammar, we will continue to practice identifying subjects, predicates, and various parts of speech.
Tests and Other Stuff...
IMPORTANT - Now that students have started using their Acers, they will need to bring in headphones or earbuds. I'm hopeful whatever
headphones your child used last year will still work. Students can start bringing them in tomorrow!
Tuesday, September 13 - our class was invited to a special lesson in the library in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. Students will have
a chance to meet Mrs. Peoples, who is a teacher on special assignment this year.
- our class visits the Book Fair from 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM.
Wednesday, September 14 - Donut Day in the Book Fair from 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM.
Thursday, September 15 - *** slight change***
We are going to push the test forward by one day. Seeing how long it took many of the students
to write their Weekly Reflection last Friday, I think we might need a bit more time to walk through the
review. The math test will be FRIDAY, Sept. 16 and Monday, Sept. 19. HOWEVER, if your child is ready,
has been practicing, and wants to take the whole thing on Friday, I'm fine with that! That's how we used to
do it.
A reminder that our practice test is almost IDENTICAL to the real one. Some of the problems are set up
the same and just have different numbers. It's really important that your child look over their practice test
Thursday nigh!
Friday, September 16 - Part 1 of the math test (If a student feels ready, they absolutely can finish it on Friday.).
Coming up with have...
A reminder that we are going to Chapter 3 in math (and not 2)!!! That's the beginning of multiplication! Students will be learning multiple strategies, but the sooner they start practicing their facts and committing them to memory, the better they will be. We will also be starting our Mad Minutes - a continuation of the 3 minute math fact tests that students took last year.
For those who have been asking about our class wish list, I've linked it under my name. Some of the students have been asking about specific books, so they are on there, too!
Have a great week!
