Looking Ahead at 9/27 - 9/30
Dear Dragonfly Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. There is an Excessive Heat Warning until Wednesday, so plan accordingly!
This short week has us finishing what we started. We will be wrapping up Chapter 3 in math, finishing an autumn poem and diving into Personal Narrative, continuing with Inquiry and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in social studies.

Today, students will be bringing home their Prerequisite Skills Test Analysis Page, along with their Chapter 1 test. The Prerequisite Skills Test is something that all students take at each grade level. The test 3rd graders took shows what SECOND GRADE math standards haven't been mastered.
This is an example of what you will see (this test is not allowed to be sent home per district policy). All the way to the left is the question number (19). Next to it is the exact standard the question covered (2.NBT.7). In the center is a 'parent friendly' explanation of the type of question and what went wrong. We can see here that question 19 involved regrouping and it wasn't done correctly. Number 20 was a question involving regrouping when there was a 0 in the tens place.
Quite a few students are still struggling with regrouping / 3 digit subtraction - despite being told they need to write their work down, they are still trying to subtract these numbers in their heads. Some students will write things down, but quickly, so their numbers are lined up incorrectly. It's a long process to help students understand that being neat and organized in math is one of the most important lessons they will learn.

To practice the specific 2nd skills your child missed, or is still struggling with, hop onto IXL. After logging in and clicking on math, slide over to "Skills Plan" and you'll see an image of the CA flag.
- select Grade 2 - scroll through to find the specific standard (in this case 2.NBT.7) - click on what you'd like to practice (in this case, three digit subtraction and subtraction across zeros) ** FYI - when the district added IXL to our bookmarks, the student user names changed! They were all given a new card to glue in their planners, but it's the same username they use for RenStar now. All passwords stayed the same. |
Tests and Other Stuff...
IMPORTANT: Students need to return their signed Reflections and Parent Communication Folders ! Thank you!
Reading Counts - tests must be taken at school. If a book has been published fairly recently, it might not be in RC yet. Your child can always check at school if a book is on RC before reading it.
Lexia - While you CAN access Lexia and practice at home, there are times when Lexia might be having issues, or the district is pushing out something/doing work on the server, and students might not be able to get one. Questions about that need to be directed to our district Tech Department.
Coming up we have:
Tuesdays/Thursdays - Run Club from 7:30 - 8:00
Friday, September 30 - Chapter 3 math test
Friday, September 30 - Family Dance Party 5:30 - 8:30
Wednesday, October 5 - Fall Recess NO SCHOOL
Thursday, October 13 - Picture Day
Friday, October 14 - Movie Night
We will also be having a Fall Fun Run from October 10 - October 21. Information will be coming from the PFA soon!
